Today was both our first time hiking with the Loma Prieta Sierra Club’s Day Hiking Section and our first visit to Windy Hill Open Space Preserve in the Santa Cruz Mountains. To be honest, I might not have visited Windy Hill if not for this trip. It’s a one-hour drive to get there, and it’s small—at 1,312 [...] I hadn’t been to Mount Diablo since my trip up Eagle Peak in November. But today was one of the first clear days after two weeks of daily rain, so Elizabeth and I took advantage of it with a quick morning hike to Mount Diablo’s Falls Trail. When we started at 8:30 in the morning it was 46 [...] A late-November hike up the Castle Crags Trail to Castle Dome. [...] Elizabeth and I stayed in Weaverville last night, still awestruck from the huge flocks of geese we saw in the Central Valley. Weaverville is a town of a few thousand people nestled in the Klamath Mountains, just south of the half-million acre Trinity Alps Wilderness.
